On the YouTube Comments Section

Let me start off by saying this: the YouTube comments section is a cesspool of ill-conceived thoughts spouted at the height of emotion with absolutely no thought whatsoever. This can be something said concerning the comments section of any website really. I’ll admit I do enjoying trolling at the expense of those blockheads that take postings on YouTube way too seriously.

I understand some videos on YouTube are serious and can inspire genuine discussion, but let’s face it. 90% of the content is mindless drivel meant purely for mass consumption. This isn’t to say I don’t get some form of satisfaction from it, everyone does. But the problem is when people subscribe to a YouTuber (I still can’t believe that can be an actual profession now) and they lose their shit if the YouTuber does something that they don’t agree with. And they end up berating the YouTuber. For example, I was just watching the final video of a series of these two friends playing through Super Mario 64, just for a little nostalgia kick, and one of the comments started like this:

”…you have disappointed me and the whole tuclan…”

A little context: this was a race between the two friends. One team was the tuclan. The player representing that team lost.

The commenter said this as if it was the player’s duty to appease them, the viewers, by winning. That the player has committed a huge injustice by losing (it was a close race, by the way). But that is not the case at all. The player has no duty to the viewer in anyway. In fact, what he is doing is entirely a favour to the viewer. The player has every right to tell that commenter to “fuck off” for being an entitled ass and I would respect him more for it.

Even on the more thought provoking videos, there were usually be bickering of some fool thing or the other; half the time not even related to the video at hand (and about the quarter of the time about some hot button issue that really shouldn’t be an issue). Then, someone decides to pull the grammar card and automatically calling the other person invalid because of it (seriously…YouTube comments are a great place to see examples of logical fallacies). And of course what comment thread wouldn’t be complete without someone calling someone else “gay” or a “fag”.

Honestly, YouTube is the high school of the internet. A little learning, a lot of bullshit, and a whole heap-load of sexual insecurity.
